The Long Beach, California, Homekey at 5950 Project transformed the former Luxury Inn into Interim housing for individuals experiencing homelessness. Developed through California’s Project Homekey Program, the project demonstrates the value of adaptive reuse in rapidly expanding housing opportunities.
The renovation modernized all 78 rooms, including 15 ADA-compliant units, with upgraded bathrooms, fixtures, plumbing, electrical systems, Wi-Fi connectivity, and new fire alarm and sprinkler systems. Beyond the residential units, site improvements included enhanced open spaces, laundry facilities, a pet area, parking upgrades, and dedicated offices for case management and mental health services.
Operated by PATH, the facility offers comprehensive supportive services, including case management, employment and benefits assistance, housing navigation, meals, and referrals to permanent housing. The project was delivered through the City of Long Beach’s On-Call services program, with Egis providing construction management and inspection services in partnership with the City’s Public Works and Health Departments.
Funded in part by a $5.15 million Project Homekey grant, with a total completion budget of $14.2 million, the facility has become a model for supportive housing and community-focused redevelopment. Recognized with a 2026 ACEC California Engineering Excellence Commendation Award, Homekey at 5950 demonstrates how strategic investment in housing infrastructure can deliver lasting benefits for residents and the broader community.
